  For Lena and Sasha

  1957

  I’m - Goya!

  I’m - Goya!

  On the barren ground,

a raven gobbled down my eyeballs gorily.

  I’m - Worry.

  I’m the voice of

The war; the debris of cities

destroyed in the snows of the early forties.

  I’m - Fraud.

  I’m the throat

Of the woman hanged, whose body above the courtyard

continued to beat like a church-bell, glowing.

  I’m - Goya!

  O, Grapes

of Wrath! With passion, I heaved to the West

  the ashes of guests unwanted!

and hammered durable stars like nails into the skies of glory.

  I’m – Goya.

  1957

  1959

  In a phone-booth, eyes in tears…

In a phone-booth, eyes in tears,

Stands a young girl, all distraught,

Hides her face, with lipstick smeared,

  Deep into her flimsy coat.

  Skinny fingers cup her face.

Fingers – sting. And earrings - blaze.

  All alone she must retreat

Back on down the frozen street.

It’s the first frost. For the first time.

From a phone phrase, it’s the first rime.

Frozen marks on the cheeks glow–

It’s the first frost of a human woe.

  1959

  1965

  Still…

Place your palms on my shoulders,

  let us embrace, -

only the breath of your lips on my face,

behind us, only the crashing rollers.

Our backs like two moonlit shells

  are shut together behind us,

  we cuddle, observing the quietness,

forming life’s double bond with ourselves.

In the midst of a circus-like game,

we use our shoulders to screen

  the love that arises between,

like two palms screening a flame.

Does each cell have a soul within it?

If so, swing open those doors

and your souls will flutter like linnets

in the cages of my pores!

Every mystery will soon become known.

Is it possible that we also will be

torn apart to dry up alone, --

like two muted shells near the sea?

The eggshells of our backs are smothered

with the burden of life’s heavy heap.

This presses us to one another.

  We’re asleep.

  1965

  1971

  I am your extended wife…

  I am your extended wife.

You also have a wife - immediate.

I am needed in your life.

  I commiserate completely.

I know your child holds you back.

With you arms around me wound,

You are staring at the clock –

  I won’t even make a sound.

In God’s name, do not stand still…

You were meant to be together.

  My extended sister will

Make your bed, it’s for the better.

On the train, I’ll flee from love,

  Jealousy will drive me crazy!

  Staring at your photograph,

I’ll make sure to bring a razor.
